Announcement - HP DL980 G7 Server now orderable

This 8 phsyical processor server that was announced back in June is now orderable.

HP ProLiant DL980 G7 with HP PREMA Architecture is an eight socket server built to handle the largest x86 enterprise environments with confidence. The DL980 G7 blends industry standard economies with advanced mission critical capabilities to deliver balanced scaling, self healing resiliency and breakthrough efficiencies needed in essential enterprise compute environments. Whether housing a single very large data intensive workload, or many consolidated or virtualized workloads to improve resource utilization, the DL980 G7 featuring PREMA Architecture with Smart CPU caching and a redundant system fabric, is designed to reduce bottlenecks, improve throughput and performance, as well as deliver enhanced reliability not previously available in an environment.

HP PCIe I/O Accelerators (SSD) for ProLiant Servers

A New level of Solid state storage is now available for customers who needs the ultimate in I/O Read and Write speed performance...and in my opinion ultimately the way forward for server storage in the future..

Firstly before we get into the speeds and feeds... What is an I/O accelerator? - An I/O Accelerator is an advanced storage device that uses solid state storage technology directly on the PCI bus, assuring high read and write data rates and accelerated application performance.

Just how fast is this storage?? well see for yourself....

600278-B21 - HP 160GB SLC PCIe ioDrive
  • Usable Capacity - 160GB
  • Technology - NAND Flash, SLC
  • Bandwidth - 670 MB/s Writes, 750MB/s Reads
  • Latency - 50 microseconds
  • IOPS - 93,000 IOPS (75/25 R/W mix 4K packet size)

600279-B21 - HP 320GB MLC PCIe ioDrive
  • Usable Capacity - 320GB
  • Technology - NAND Flash, MLC
  • Bandwidth - 490MB/s Writes , 700MB/s Reads
  • Latency - 80 microseconds
  • IOPS - 67000 IOPS (75/25 R/W mix 4K packet size)

600281-B21 - HP 320GB SLC PCIe ioDrive Duo
  • Usable Capacity - 320 GB
  • Technology- NAND Flash, SLC
  • Bandwidth- 1.4GB/s Writes, 1.5GB/s Reads... !!!
  • Latency - 50 microseconds
  • IOPS - Over 125,000 (75/25 R/W mix 4K packet size).

600282-B21 - HP 640GB MLC PCIe ioDrive Duo
  • Usable Capacity - 640GB
  • Technology - NAND Flash, MLC
  • Bandwidth - 1.0GB/s Writes, 1.4GB/s Reads
  • Latency - 80 microseconds
  • IOPS - Over 120, 000 IOPS (75/25 R/W mix 4K packet size)

As you can see there are huge performance gains on storage speeds. Now as for price... well we will skip that for now as you can imagine they are pretty expensive, sometimes needs must though !!

I also hear you ask what is NAND MLC and SLC and what is the difference? Well NAND is a technology that uses flash memory cells to store data. Single level Cell (SLC) stores one bit (data) per cell, while Multi-level Cell (MLC) uses two bits per cell. While MLC can store more data within each device, it has lower endurance characteristics (Slower) than SLC.

These cards cannot be used as a boot device as yet, also these cards are only supported on the following operating systems at this time, RHEL 4,5 (64-bit support only); SLES 10, 11* (64-bit support only), Windows Server x86-64 2003, 2008 (64-bit support only).

SOLUTION NEWS : Blade solution comes out cheaper in 1200 user terminal environment !!

I have just finished providing a solution for a customer who's requirements needed a 1,200 user terminal environment.

Initially when speaking with the customer on the discovery stage the customer was not too sure about using a blade centre solution. We ended up agreeing to provide 3 solution options, one using the new DL360 G7 servers, one using the BladeSystem with BL460 G6 (with the new 56xx series processors) servers and the last solution using the larger 4 processor DL580 G7 servers.

Results on costing were surprising.. The BladeSystem came in at around 10% cheaper than the DL580 solution and 6% cheaper than the DL360 solution, and don’t forget that this is just on the hardware alone!!

There are other major savings that you can benefit from when using blade solutions such as less rack space. Using blades as opposed to the rack servers reduced the space needed for the terminal servers alone by 10u when compared to the DL360 servers and 28u when using the DL580 servers. As you probably already know power and cooling is constantly monitored in a HP blade environment to use the smallest amount of energy as possible whilst maintaining a reliable environment which in turn save you money on cooling and power costs.

Whilst this is not new news, its nice as a reminder that blade solutions are a very competitive solution in a larger environment.
